The Van Winkle family recipe traces to Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle Sr., who built his career on a wheated bourbon mashbill — substituting wheat for rye as the secondary grain — at Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Louisville. The recipe passed through three generations: Pappy Sr., his son Julian Jr., and Julian Van Winkle III, who partnered with Buffalo Trace Distillery in 2002 to continue production using Pappy’s original wheated formula. All Van Winkle bourbons have been produced at Buffalo Trace in Frankfort, Kentucky since that year.

At 15 years and 107 proof, the Family Reserve 15 Year represents the point at which the wheated mashbill begins to show significant barrel integration — the oak has fully merged with the caramel and fruit character rather than competing with it, producing a bourbon of considerable depth and length without sacrificing the softness that defines the wheated recipe.

Stitzel-Weller Era Bottlings

Family Reserve 15 Year bottlings from approximately 2002 through 2009 were produced using Stitzel-Weller distillate — whiskey distilled at the original Stitzel-Weller plant before the 2002 transition to Buffalo Trace production. These vintage bottlings carry the character of the original Louisville distillate and are among the most collectible expressions in the entire Van Winkle catalog.
